All about the Rummu flooded prison lake in Estonia

The Fifth Season is period of spring flooding in the Soomaa National Park. There is no better way of enjoying this time in Soomaa National Park than canoeing through its water along roads, through forests, past farmhouses and over fields. Canoeing is an active way of relaxing in nature which is suitable for all age

The prisoners in this Soviet prison probably did not imagine that the quarry they were forced to work in would someday become a beautiful diving spot. The prison was established in the 1940s by the Soviet Union. It was built on the lip of a limestone quarry in which the prisoners were forced to toil. When Estonia regained its independence in 1991, the Soviets moved out and the prison at Rummu was closed. Since then, anyone looked after the natural ground water that seeped into the former quarry and it soon filled up with water. And so, a new lake was created and became a popular beach attraction.
