After WWII Brest Fortress was renamed to the Brest Hero fortress and entire fortress complex was turned into a huge memorial to the men and women who died defending the position and eventually large statues were installed. Nowadays most of the defense walls are still preserved just as they were after war with crumbling walls and walls pierced with bullet holes. The most famous statue is so called “Thirst” – soldier drinking of river water. This place gives goose bumps and happy feeling at the same time – it is scary how small person is in the eyes of war and it gives us a happy feeling that there are and where human beings who are/were ready to give up their lives to save other human beings.
